Species
Sinanodonta woodiana Historical and present distribution Invasive alien species. It was brought to Poland most likely from Hungary in the mid 1980s, with the fry of Asian herbivorous fish. It has inhabited the system of heated lakes and canals built at Konin power station. In 2002 new site was found in Wielkopolska voivodeship. In 2004 the presence of S. woodiana was noted in a cooling water discharge canal of the "Dolna Odra" power station in Nowy Czarnów. The species distribution still expands in Poland. Recently, it was noted in Śląsk and in new sites in Wielkopolska (Spyra et. al. 2012), in the upper course of Vistula river (Najberek et. al. 2010 (fish ponds), Zając unpubl. (old river bed) and in Podkarpacie region (Wojton et al. 2012, Zając unpubl.). It is worth of noticing that some of those localities are in natural waters, which are not warmed, which is contrary to common expectations, that this species reproduce only in temperature 10-35oC. Conservation Status Unprotected in Poland. Invasive alien species General biology and life history traits Growth:in warmed waters – 125-160mm, max. 200. Lifespan:9 years (max recorded), 70% of population in Konin between 2-5 years Age of maturity : 2 years. Shell length ca 3-4 cm. Reproductive cycle : parasitic period in Konin lakes lasts 4-9 days Larvae release W klimacie umiarkowanym larwy w planktonie stwierdzane są zwykle od maja do początku września, ale w wodach podgrzanych - dłużej, od marca-kwietnia (Stańczykowska, Lewandowski 2012) Known hosts: In a natural site where Sw was found, Hypophthalamichthys molitrix (Valenciennes, 1844) is regularly introduced. In other antropogenic sites all species regarded as hosts were recorded. Major threats: unknown in Poland Conservation and management measures being applied or to be applied in the near future: Although not protected, it is also not eliminated. In warm waters it can reach significant quantities (Konin) thus it can be a important competitor for native species. References Kraszewski A. 2007.
